Local patch reporter – Zoe Cheadle: Nestbuilding coots

Local Patch Reporter Zoe Cheadle films coots building a nest.

Species: coot

Location: Westport Lake, Stafforshire

Date: 16 March 2014

In all honesty, I have never paid a lot of attention to wetland birds.

Small garden birds have always been my favourite type of bird. But yesterday, I spent the morning at Westport Lake hoping to catch sight of grebes performing the mating dance.

As I sat and waited by the lake, I noticed a small nest under a tree made from twigs.

A coot came along and began pulling at twigs from the tree above and gathering twigs from the lake to add to the nest.

I spotted four different coot nests as I walked around the lake.

I will be keeping an eye on what happens in these nests throughout spring.

Fact: Coots build nests in shallow water from vegetation. The nests are also usually sheltered by vegetation.

BBC Wildlife wanted to find a new way to share some of our readers’ natural-history diaries with other wildlife enthusiasts, and Local Patch Reporters was born.

Our 20 Local Patch Reporters for 2014 are aged from 10 to 64 and live from Dorset in the south to Shetland in the north.

Throughout this year they will be exploring and reporting on nature in their neighbourhood via online blogs.

Zoe Cheadle is a Local Patch Reporter from Staffordshire.

Zoe’s nature patch: Apedale Country Park, Silverdale Country Park and Westport Lake

“I received a camera-trap last Christmas and I have used this to find out more about wildlife. I am a member of the RSPB and enjoy exploring nature reserves close to my home and further afield,” she says.

Zoe’s wildlife aims for 2014: Join a local bat group, wake up early to hear the dawn chorus, observe a red deer rut and photograph a kingfisher.
