How to make… a fat cake

Help birds this winter when bugs and berries are scarce by ‘baking’ fat cakes.

1. In a pan, melt some lard or suet. Stir in a mixture of birdseed, raisins, oats, breadcrumbs and peanuts.

2. Make a hole in a yoghurt pot, thread it with string and knot it. Pack in the mixture.

3. Leave the mixture to set overnight, then carefully cut the pot away from the hardened mix.

4. Hang your fat cakes from trees and shrubs, and enjoy watching the visitors that come to feast.
