A reader's letter from an old issue of magazine?

Postby Adam Hardy » Sun May 01, 2011 11:02 am

About 3 or 6 months ago, the top reader's letter in the BBC Wildlife Mag was a thought-provoking demand that we in Britain do something to save our own forests before we go blaming Brazil and Indonesia for destroying their rainforests. It mentioned stuff about reforesting our tree-less areas and how economically it would be a winner.

I'd love to get the text and the writer's name but unfortunately I gave away or threw out the old copy at the time.

Can I get hold of it anywhere? Even perhaps search through old correspondence? (Sounds a bit optimistic, I know).

Thanks
Adam

I'll have a look, I keep the latest 13 issues. Does anyone know how one can find out about tree planting in their local area?

Hi Hawk Eye,

that'd be really great if you manage to ind it. Sorry I can't be more specific about the issue but I have a pile of unread magazines and I just grab a bunch of them when I'm travelling to read on the train.

But it was definitely the Editor's Choice letter of the month, and the correspondent won the prize - a pair of boots or a camera or something.

Re tree planting, have you tried the Woodland Trust? They are nationwide. They often have massive planting programmes.

Also you could try Trees for London or perhaps your local area whereever you are - there's bound to be a local charity. Even your local Wildlife Trust might know.

Is that the kind of thing you are talking about, or do you mean your local council planting on the roads where you live? I'd assume your council's planning office would be the place to start.

Hi Hawk Eye,

did you have any luck looking in your back issues?

Regarding tree planting: Without knowing, I would suspect that any "planting drives" (e.g. free trees as last year, and other campaigns) would be over by now as it is too late for bare rooted trees. Bare rooted trees are much cheaper than pot/root ball trees and thus I would expect campaigns to take place whilst trees are cheaper.

But don't let my thoughts put you off and do keep checking.

What type/species of tree are you looking for ?

Hi Adam

I've just been able to look through the back issues for you - the issue in question was October 2010 and the letter was by Brian Burnett.

I'm sure you can appreciate that I can't give out his details, but if you'd like to email me at heathermckay@bbcmagazines.com I can then forward it on to him.

Hope that helps,

Wow! Thanks a lot Heather. What's the best way to get hold of a copy of the text, without going to the expense of buying the back-issue again? (I normally keep them for a couple of years but took this one on holiday so it got left on a train somewhere).
