MY small fish pond was visited by a heron last week. sob! It took Charles (our pet of 9+ years) the following day it got Flash, an 8 year old. now the remaining 4 won't come out to feed. They used to surface when ever I was there. I am heart broken. They are now protected from further attack.

They'll probably come up again eventually but they'll still feed properly. They'll just scoop it up when it nears the bottom.
The past is just that, the past. Today is what matters.

Sorry to hear of your loss. It's great to see herons but not on our domestic ponds. Dad had the same problem several years ago when the heron cleared out the pond of all his mature fish. He has since restocked and the pond is now netted.

All pond life copes reasonably well with trauma. We had a heron snatch some of our fish a couple of years ago. My father turned up with a rather sorry looking, second hand plastic heron, which I simply laughed at. I have to admit though we've not seen another heron at the pond since, so maybe those things actually do work!?
