Life on Air - David Attenborough

Postby Hawk_Eye » Fri Dec 09, 2011 12:57 pm

I finished this a few weeks ago and have been meaning to review it on here since then. The one I read was the first edition, it has recently ben released in an updated version.

This is the best autobiography I've read. Unlike many autobiographies which start in the author's childhood and go from there, Attenborough starts from when he applied to work at the BBC. His writing style is very similar to his presenting style which makes for a free flowing and readable book.
He packs a lot of information into the book - not a bad thing in this case - about his early days in radio through to the first Zoo Quest series to his ifrst meetin with Komodo Dragons and on to The Living Planet and culminates in The Life of Birds. His anecdotes about the animals and people he meet and worked with are often humourous and certainly fascinating. His knowledge and enthusiam can be seen on every page which makes it even more readable, it also shows how grounded he is as a person with a healthy appetite for knowledge and an open mind.
I would definately recommend this book to all.
The past is just that, the past. Today is what matters.

Read the book a while and really enjoyed it.

It's interesting to note how Sir David was responsible for some controversial programmes being aired on BBC2 as well as his getting an insight into the production of wildlife programmes.
I'd agree with you, but then we'd both be wrong.

Indeed. I remember hearing an interview where he said that at the time of Zoo Quest, the conservation issue that there is today didn't enter their minds back then. It was just about finding the animals and bringing them back for the general public to see live.
