What to plant in tubs/pots?

Hi all,

On a similar theme to Jim's last post...

I've moved into an apartment recently, so no longer have a garden as such, but have a balcony/terraced area (I'm on the ground floor, in case this makes any difference).

Can anyone recommend any plants that are good for bees and/or butterflies, and that grow well in tubs/pots?

Ideally they will
a) not also be good for slugs and snails (another hypocrite, sorry) - I ...

What to plant?

Right then green fingered types, I've got a question.

What should I plant now to maximise the chance of getting some wildlife, particularly butterflies and bees, into the garden?

Now there are a few things. First is that they have to be low maintenance, I just don't get too much spare time. Secondly, they can't produce anything that is remotely toxic to kids or dogs. Thirdly, as alluded to in 'secondly' they have to be ...

Nest identification

Hello, I am new to this. I have a wee bird nest that I found on the ground underneath my rhododendron bush about 6 weeks ago. I thought maybe it was a hummingbird's nest because it is so small. However, reading on the internet, it seems it's too big to be a hummingbird nest. I am posting to see if anyone can help me. They're not the best pictures but its relationship to the size ...

Moving trees

Not strictly wildlife related (sorry! But it is gardening!) but anyone got any tips on how and when to move small trees?

I'm moving house soon and I've got a small acer that I planted in my garden that I'd like to take with me, I'm thinking it will fit very nicely in a pot, at least short term, but I'm not sure how to move it there.

Just to up my wildlife credentials I ...

Starling Nest in the Roof

For the past two years I have had a pair of starlings nest in an overhang of my roof. The first season they were unsuccessful and left the nest early, this year I saw 6 birds fledge which was a lovely sight.

My question is that I would like to repair the roof and this will involve removing the nest.

I would like the birds to continue to nest and don’t want to take this ...

Hypocritical ?

I like to think I do what I can to help and encourage wildlife. To try and restore a balance to the destruction we have (and continue to) inflict on the environment. But then comes my lawn. Although I am a useless gardener, this year my lawn has been completely taken over by clover (mainly) and other weeds - an ideal environment for so much wildlife. And the bees, already under lot of pressure love ...

Roofing slates

Many many thanks goes to Ben Hoare and his advice to leave out old roofing slates in the garden ;)

I have a garden with a bit of south facing rough slope next to an abandoned quarry. I'd been arguing for weeks about the wildlife value of an old rusty sheet of corrugated iron with my wife. "It's great" I'd say and she'd come back with "But ...

Planting up new wildlife pond - when? Planting up new wildlife pond - when?

Hi there!

I dug a wildlife pond around September last year. I put a few marginal plants in baskets in there and also some oxgenators. However, being autumn, the plants didn't really grow (the marginals flowered so I'm assuming they didn't just die!), so all winter I've just been looking at a few brown, twiggy, plants in a big pool of water! Yuck!

So this year I want to make sure I get the pond ...

Wildlife Gardener Business idea

I have been working as a countryside warden for the council for about 3 years now and am considering starting my own business as a 'Wildlife Gardener', working in peoples gardens.

My thinking is that having the background that I do will create me some sort of niche in the market.

I'd imagine it to be partly a consultant role and partly practical.

I was wondering if anyone has any experience in something similar or ...
