Member photo contests - not really a fair comp

Postby lucky » Sun Nov 28, 2010 8:40 am

Hi,

While I like the idea of the photo comps for members, I find the voting is wide open for abuse and vote stuffing. I looked through the recent birds comp and the leading entry (most votes) is a staggering 70+ votes ahead of its nearest rival (and the photo is pretty poor and not even in focus). You can also vote more than once for an image as long as you only do it once per day, so I guess if you post an image on day one of the comp, you can vote for your own photo at least 60 times before voting closes. This makes it very unfair to those who want to enjoy a competition on what I feel is a professional and respected website.

Is there a way to tighten the voting limits, and I guess do the winning images get scrutinised and judged by moderators before being announced as the winner? I would hate to see an image that didn't deserve to win be posted on the site for the world to see.

This is not sour grapes but under the present system I would rather the winner be chosen by the moderators of the site and not on the uncontrolled popularity voting method.

I have to agree on that one. I see one photo has over 200 votes! But at the end of the day, if my photos are submitted and published that makes me happy. I don;t expect to win with the quality on the site.....but just to see my photo published is all I need. But I have to agree with you ...there should be a fairer way of voting....there are some absolutely stunning photos with very little votes!

Hi, I had posted my photo and I think it did very very well, As off about 2 hours ago, It was leading with 476 vote and the 2nd person had 434 vote and the 3rd had 287 vote, I had posted my photo on the 10th of November and requested my friends and their friend to vote if they liked my photo using facebook.
But in the last one hour, I have seen that there has been some crazy active that has taken place, We have one entry which has over 4444 vote and one which has over 2700 vote and a third which has over 1300 vote , all having happened in the last one hour.
So I guess you can say that this is not really a photo competition

I totally agree with the remarks and suggestions made by nk1 and darryl the fairness of the competition is not apparent. I do believe that the submitted entries should and could be judged by the editorial staff at the magazine, and not left open to some abuse. This may sound quite harsh on the submitters of work but I do believe there are some attempts to abuse the voting system! That said I believe that the standard of some of the photographs are exceptional....there great! thankyou to all that submit
