Only Natural - by James McCulloch (14)

Postby JamesM » Tue Jul 26, 2016 3:47 pm

Hello everyone, my name is James McCulloch and I'm 13 years old and with a huge passion for nature. I'm interested in every aspect of natural history from freshwater algae to birds. Recently I won the inaugural NBN Gilbert White Youth Award for Outstanding Contribution to Terrestrial and Freshwater Biological Recording which I was very pleased about! I keep a Pan-species List (a list of every species you find) and you can follow my progress here: http://www.brc.ac.uk/psl/users/jimmymac2
My blog is about my trips to local nature reserves, my local patch, interesting species I come across and occasionally trips further afield. I try to make my blog posts as informative and enjoyable as possible, I hope you like them! Here's a link to my blog: http://www.jiainmac.wordpress.com

Hello everyone, my latest blog post is all about the Green Woodpecker after I was lucky enough to ring one the other day. What an amazing bird.

Hi James,

Very interesting post on the popping of seed pods.

It reminded me of a documentary I had watched on Yellowstone National Park. A part of it described how how forest fires provide the perfect temperature for release of seeds.

It was a long time ago, but if I find any information on the documentary I will let you know. In the meantime here's an article which explains the process quite nicely:

Keep up your good work!

Kind Regards,

Malvika

Hi Malvika,
I'm very glad you liked the post! I haven't come across that story about the pine cones before, but it is really interesting. Thanks for the link!
