Day 11 of 30 days Wild - Helping hand

Postby Appletonwildlifediary » Wed Jun 20, 2018 8:32 pm

Just after getting home from school today we heard a commotion coming from the utility room.
A pigeon had come in from the garden through the open door, hopped up on to the window sill but then couldn’t find its way back out and had started to panic.
Grabbing a towel we managed to catch it, check it hadn’t damaged any of its feather, as it was flapping about against the glass, before letting it go in the garden.
The pigeon waddled off down the garden path, back towards the bird feeder.

Day 15 of 30 days Wild - garden at night

Postby Appletonwildlifediary » Mon Jun 25, 2018 7:43 am

I often put a trail camera out in the garden at night to see who visits. Sometimes badgers, sometimes foxes and very occasionally hedgehogs.

Day 17 of 30 Days Wild - road side verges

Postby Appletonwildlifediary » Mon Jun 25, 2018 9:30 pm

As hundreds of cars and lorries thunder past one of Oxfordshire busiest dual carriageways, a few metres away, up on the slip road, two species of wild Orchids can be found.

Day 19 of 30 Days Wild

Postby Appletonwildlifediary » Thu Jun 28, 2018 7:51 am

Day 19 of 30 Days Wild was a walk around the woods.

I write a 50 word account about my local woods each month for our Parish website

If you go down to the woods today two plants are very obvious. Firstly the non-native Himalayan Balsam, one of the UK’s most invasive plants spreading very rapidly and growing 3m tall. In contrast the native Honeysuckle, found climbing up and around trees and scrubs. Honeysuckle flowers attracts moths, butterflies and insects, the berries attract thrushes and bullfinches.

For Day 21 of 30 Days Wild I joined lots of other citizen scientists around the UK sampling the air for background fungal spores, to monitor for resistance to azole fungicide drugs.

Day 24 of 30 Days Wild - pond dipping

Postby Appletonwildlifediary » Tue Jul 03, 2018 7:42 am

Just under a year ago we built a pond in our garden. It has many visitors that use it to drink from, but today we thought we would find out what lived in the pond.

Sadly no tadpoles yet, but we did find plenty of pond snails, water boatman, water louse, pond skaters and lots of tiny little water beetles and wigglies that I didn’t manage to get any photos of.
