Today is World Whale Day, we are so lucky to share our oceans worldwide with these gentle giants. Whales keep our oceans healthy. It’s vital that we do not take them for granted & fight for their protection. We can all do this by giving them space on the water, avoid places with captive whales & reduce our plastic, litter & pollution. They may be big & highly intelligent but they are not invincible in our changing world.

At the end of the bumpy, rocky and damaged logging road beyond the tiny town of Port Renfrew, stand the relics of an ancient forest; towering to the sky, these giants have dominated the landscape for a thousand years. Even in a place as wild as Vancouver Island, the old growth rainforest is a rare sight and experience. Three hours from my home in Victoria, the mighty forest at Avatar Grove is a pilgrimage for any nature lover.

Last week I had the joy of seeing a northern harrier hunting over the reedbeds on Vancouver Island, a gorgeous bird often called the sky dancer, such a joy to see!

Nearly 500,000 people took part and 8 million birds counted, the RSPB has released the results of the Big Garden Birdwatch and it is a mixed bag, some bird populations are up and some are down, and one bird in particular dominated this winter!

It has been a while since I last blogged, and I shall be doing a big round up from my trip to the UK. But I just wanted to share the snake’s-head fritillary, there are quite a few around my hometown in Leicestershire, and I think they are just beautiful!

If you think you had a rough week, spare a thought for EJ the osprey, as she was covered in some Spring snow in Scotland! Just a few short months ago, EJ the osprey was basking under the Afican sun, last week however she had to endure the unpredictability of a Scottish spring, as her nest was covered in a thick layer of snow.

Gosh it has been a while since my last blog, my patch is finally starting to warm up and come to life after a long winter! The Garry oak meadows, an endangered Canadian habitat, are found in my patch, so one warm evening this week I went for a pretty magical walk in the beautiful meadows!

I have seen a lot of barn swallows on my patch recently, and decided to blog about about brilliant they are!

Oh my goodness I am green with envy! Beautiful bee-eaters have been spotted on my patch in the East Midlands, just a few mins from my house. I am currently in Canada so unable to go and see these incredible birds! I have even heard they have hatched chicks, which is just amazing for wildlife in the East Midlands!!
