Coral Triangle photo gallery by Jürgen Freund
In 2009 WWF commissioned Jürgen Freund to photograph the seas of the Coral Triangle, one of the planet’s most biodiverse marine ecosystems.
Jürgen and his wife Stella spent 18 months traversing the waters of six countries – the Philippines, Malaysia, Indonesia, East Timor, Papua New Guinea and the Solomon Islands. They swam with vividly coloured reef fish, dazzling sea stars and sleek sharks. They met ordinary villagers, conservation workers, fishermen and park rangers. And they witnessed both conservation setbacks and initiatives that gave them hope for the future of these precious waters.
Jürgen is a German underwater photographer. His iconic shot of a whale-shark hunt in the Philippines won a top award in the 1998 World Press Photo contest.
