Discover Wildlife

Iony Island photo gallery by Toshiji Fukuda

About the photographer

A photographer for nearly 40 years, at first Toshiji Fukuda specialised in the wildlife of his native Japan. But since 1990 he has developed a relationship with the Russian Academy of Sciences, travelling in the Russian Far East to document research themes in the taiga and tundra.

Drawn to remote locations in Siberia, Fukuda’s images offer insights into animal interactions. His work has been published in magazines in Japan, and the first of several books was published in 1979.

He is currently in the Russian Far East again, working to capture some of the very first images of the endangered Amur tiger in the wild.
