The British Wildlife Photography Awards competition gives both amateur and professional photographers alike the opportunity to highlight the wealth and diversity of British wildlife, capture fascinating behaviour and draw attention to important conservation issues.

The winning and highly commended entries are included in a touring exhibition, and feature in a commemorative book with the best of the other entries – and the overall British Wildlife Photographer of the Year receives a prize of £5,000! There is also an exclusive awards ceremony in London.

BBC Wildlife Animal Portraits award

This year BBC Wildlife Magazine is sponsoring the immensely popular ‘Animal Portraits’ category.

“We’re delighted to get involved,” said editor Sheena Harvey, who will be one of the judges of the competition. “The British Wildlife Photography Awards celebrate the best wildlife photography in Britain, and I know that our readers, and the visitors to our website, love photography as much as they love nature. So I hope that as many of them will enter as possible – and I can’t wait to see all of the entries.”

The competition closes on Saturday 30 April, and category winners will be announced in early September. There are 15 categories in total including ‘Animal Behaviour’, ‘Urban Wildlife’, ‘Coast and Marine’, ‘Botanical Britain’ and two awards for those 18 years old and under. So every entrant has an equal chance no matter their level of experience, the subject of their photograph or the kit that they use.
