Striated caracaras in the Falkland Islands

Photographer Anthony Smith has captured unique footage of this cheeky bird of prey.

Pathologically curious, highly adaptable and prone to a spot of theft, the striated caracara was persecuted to the brink of extinction. So is the bird’s comeback a conservation success, or a problem for Falklands farmers and wildlife?

Anthony Smith won the BBC Wildlife Magazine Photographic Grant, sponsored by Kowa, and travelled to the Falkland Islands to report on these mischievous birds.

“It’s hard to remember that the striated caracara is a rare, threatened species, when one of them is trying to untie your shoelaces or dismantle your tripod,” he says.
