Pros:

It's very aesthetically pleasing and compact so easy to find space for it

Cons:

You have to ensure it is placed undercover as the worms dislike too much moisture

Urbalive Worm Composter Wormery's sleek, modern design is very attractive and takes up only a small amount of space at just 60cm high. In fact, it’s been designed to be used indoors in a garden shed, garage or greenhouse, as well as in a sheltered location outdoors.

The company Wiggly Wigglers provides plenty of advice and clear instructions to help you get started.

Red worms within the wormery will convert kitchen waste into rich ‘vermicompost’ – ideal as a rich base for potting compost and as a top dressing for your pots and planters – and liquid ‘worm tea’ used as a plant fertiliser.

The Starter Kit contains the vermicompost bin, the Wiggly Guide to Worm Composting, 500g of composting worms, a bedding block, 2kg of lime mix, a moisture mate and 2kg of worm treat.

The vermicompost bin arrives in a carboard box and is easy to assemble. It’s made up of a top working tray, where kitchen waste is added; a bottom working tray where the worm casts/compost is collected; and a sump/collector tray where the worm tea is drained off via a tap at the base.

My order arrived complete with a 500g bag of writhing live worms, which added a sense of urgency to setting up my wormery, but if you would like to give it as a gift – or simply want some more time between setting up the kit and introducing live worms – you can choose to receive a voucher for live worms which you/or the recipient can redeem for free at a later date.

Unfortunately, despite my best efforts, my own attempt with the Urbalive Worm Composter Wormery was unsuccessful. I was unable to provide the required sheltered location, and having positioned the wormery outside, a sudden rain downpour led to a mass worm exodus! The worms don’t like to be too wet, so do carefully consider where you will keep yours.

Hemp Moisture Mat/Mattress for Wormery

Compatible with the Urbalive wormery these hemp mats helps protect the worms against the cold and maintain humidity in the top tray of your wormery while preventing the proliferation of midges. The mats also encourage the worms to work in the freshest waste, thereby speeding up composting and reducing odours.

To use just place the mat on the very top of your wormery (just below the lid) and then just lift to add waste. Each mat will last 2 months

The mats are made from 1000g/sq.m hemp fibre matting and come in sets of 5
