The ‘red list’ is one of three categories (with ‘green’ and ‘amber’) used to identify the conservation status of birds in the UK, Channel Islands and Isle of Man.
Status is reviewed periodically, with the most recent taking place in 2015. Evidence of a significant decline in breeding population was the most important criterion, and 67 species were red-listed, including the curlew and puffin.
