Stag beetles in South London

Entomologist Richard ‘Bugman’ Jones describes his passion for the UK’s biggest beetle.

Richard has lived in London for 25 years and is lucky to see stag beetles annually.

“They are massive, elegant, perhaps slightly frightening to people that don’t understand them,” he says.

Stag beetles spend seven years as a grub underground so if you are fortunate to see one it is likely to be during the last few weeks of their life.
