Tag reveals eel discovery
Evidence shows that the Sargasso Sea is a spawning ground of European and North American eels.
The Sargasso Sea has been the suspected spawning ground of European and North American eels since larvae were first found there in 1904.
Only now, though, do we have direct evidence that this is indeed the case.
A satellite-tagged eel has made the 2,400km journey from Nova Scotia, Canada, and it’s the first adult to be recorded in the Sargasso.
