A whale watching operator in San Diego has shared the astonishing sight of the world’s largest animal gathering in groups. They have described the gathering of blue whales as “a sight few have ever witnessed.”

“When I first began navigating San Diego’s coastal waters, I quickly realised just how much ocean wasn’t being explored by the local whale watching community,” says Domenic Biagini on Instagram.

“It soon became apparent that these whales were visiting in much greater numbers than most people realised…as long as you had boats willing to go the distance!”

Biagini, founder of Gone Whale Watching San Diego, believes these waters are the best in the world for seeing blue whales (Balaenoptera musculus).

“It’s not an exaggeration,” he says. “Few accessible places on earth have had the consistent volume of whales and the reliability of sightings as San Diego during the early to mid-summer this decade.”

Finding these huge animals in the vast ocean takes commitment, which is why Biagini can spend several hours on the water trying to find the whales.

These enormous creatures can grow to 33 metres long – that’s twice as long as a T-Rex, according to Whale and Dolphin Conservation

Seeing these ocean giants in real life is an incredible experience that can transform how people feel about the ocean and inspire them to protect it.

“There’s nothing that compares to experiencing this sort of wildlife in person,” says Biagini, “and the more people that feel that connection to nature, the better chance we have at changing attitudes about conservation for the future.”
