Honeymooner? Nature lover? The Seychelles has it all
Explore this island paradise filled with endemic plants and animals on a small-ship cruise
Located in the Indian Ocean off the coast of East Africa, the Seychelles is an archipelago best known for its white sand beaches and crystal-clear waters. But this idyllic destination is one of the most biodiverse places on the planet and a must-visit spot for nature enthusiasts.
Its remote location away from the continent means the Seychelles is home to hundreds of unique species not found anywhere else on Earth. And local people are invested in protecting them — nature reserves make up half of the country’s land mass, including two UNESCO World Heritage Sites.
A trip to the Seychelles will satisfy nature lovers and sun seekers alike. Mornings can be spent hiking and kayaking to see rare wildlife, while afternoons are perfect for lounging on the beach.

Nature and wildlife in the Seychelles

The Seychelles is a biologically important place where many unique plants and animals flourish. Here are some of the endemic species that can be found here:
Giant tortoise
This large reptile was nearly driven to extinction in the 19th century and is now only found on a handful of islands in the Seychelles. Individuals can live for up to 200 years.
Seychelles black parrot
This distinctive bird is only found on the island of Praslin in the Vallée de Mai Nature Reserve. The black parrot is the national bird of Seychelles.
Coco de Mer palm
Native only to Seychelles with separate male and female plants, the seeds of the Coco de Mer are the largest seeds in the world.
Wright’s gardenia
This unique flower is endemic to Seychelles and only found in its natural state on the island of Aride. The flower can also be seen at the botanical gardens in Mahé.
Marine life
The waters surrounding the Seychelles are also rich in biodiversity. Go snorkelling or scuba diving for a chance to see hawksbill turtles, green turtles and several species of fish. Whales and dolphins are often spotted near the island of Aride.
