How to make a bee hotel

Help solitary bees by putting a bee hotel in your garden - it's simple to make and offers vital nesting space.

You will need a tin can (or wooden box) and a selection of natural hollow tubes – bamboo canes and plant stems are ideal.

Cut the stems to the same length as the tin, and pack them tightly inside. Try to include different stem widths.

Play with the design. For instance, you could try glueing or tying several tins together to make a pyramid.

Choose a sunny spot and hang your hotel 1m from the ground, placed against a wall or fence to stop it spinning. Make sure the stem entrances are clear of debris, and keep the hotel dry.
