He's a familiar face on TV, but who is Hamza Yassin and how did he get into wildlife filmmaking?

From a childhood spent in Sudan to living in the remote Scottish Highlands, Hamza Yassin has always been fascinated by wildlife and shares his enthusiasm through his nature documentaries. Here's everything you need to know about him.

Who is Hamza Yassin?

Hamza Yassin is a wildlife presenter and filmmaker, known for his TV series on the BBC. He has also written several books including Be a Birder and Homeward Bound. He has written a children’s book, Hamza’s Wild World, which uses a dyslexia-friendly layout.  

How old is Hamza?

Hamza Yassin was born on 22 February 1990.

Which wildlife television programmes has he presented?

Hamza first presented on The One Show, before presenting CBeebies shows such as Let's Go for a Walk and Ranger Hamza’s Eco Quest. In 2023, he presented Hamza: Strictly Birds of Prey where he attempted to film some of his favourite birds. In 2025, he presented Hamza’s Hidden Wild Isles, which showcased wildlife across the seasons throughout the UK.

He also regularly presents on BBC Countryfile and Animal Park.

Where does Hamza live?

Hamza lives in the Scottish Highlands after moving there in his twenties.

How did he get into wildlife filmmaking?

Hamza began to learn English at school and by watching David Attenborough nature documentaries. He then went on to study Zoology with Conservation from Bangor University and a Masters in Biological Photography and Imaging from the University of Nottingham.

After graduating, he worked on BBC nature documentaries before finding himself in front of the camera.

Did Hamza compete on Strictly Come Dancing?

Hamza Yassin won the twentieth series of Strictly Come Dancing with professional dancer Jowita Przystał in 2022.
