It was opened in 1970 by Bob and Lyn Irwin under the name Beerwah Reptile Park. Steve and Terri Irwin took over in 1992 and renamed it Australia Zoo. Funds from The Crocodile Hunter went back into the zoo, and an animal hospital was opened in 2004.
