In short some people have survived rabies, but it's only a tiny fraction of those who display symptoms.
According to the US Journal Military Medical Research (2016), only 14 documented cases where people have survived out of the millions who have died though there are many anecdotal stories of successful outcomes around the world.
A treatment known as the Milwaukee Protocol was developed in the early 2000s whereby victims were put into a chemically induced coma. This was supposed to protect the brain and nervous system until the body had time to build up antibodies to the rabies virus.
Despite being used a number of times, the Protocol has had poor results and is largely seen as a failure.
