Foxes are adaptable animals – but this adaptivity makes them prone to getting in trouble…

Students at a primary school in Clapham, London, had quite an eventful day on Thursday 15 October, when a fox fell through the rooflight and got stuck in their assembly hall.

The (RSPCA) was called to the scene to help the frightened fox. The teachers found the fox lounging in the hall when they arrived for work in the morning. They promptly shut the doors to the assembly hall to confine the animal while the pupils went about their school day.

After close monitoring, it became clear the fox couldn’t find his own way out – especially considering he found his way in by accident.

“He’d climbed onto a flat roof outside and fallen into the hall through a rooflight which was ajar,” says RSPCA animal rescue officer Paige Havlin. “He’d made himself quite at home on top of the PE cupboard and snoozed there all day while the hall was made strictly off limits to children.”

To make sure the fox didn’t go on to explore the rest of the school, the teachers put up a sign telling everyone to keep the door shut because there was a fox inside.

“He was the talk of the corridor, and everyone found it very amusing,” adds Havlin.

After the school day ended, Havlin managed to catch the fox with a grasper. Thankfully, he wasn’t injured and was released back into the wild.
