This slithering, fork-tongued creature may look like a snake – but it does something no snake can do

It's mating season for this legless lizard, making it easier to spot – here's how to be sure it's not a snake you're seeing.

Slow worms mate this month, the females giving birth to live young in summer. 

To get into breeding condition, they will have spent much of the last few weeks feeding and warming themselves, nestled together under a log or piece of scrap wood or metal. 

These glossy, copper-and-gold reptiles are frequently mistaken for snakes, but in fact slow worms are legless lizards. Watch closely and you might see their beady eyes blink, something no snake can do.
