There are plenty of odd tongues (and other body parts) in the animal kingdom – from the lizard that sticks its tongue out at predators, to an explosively-fast tongue.
And don't forget the surprising frilly-ness of a whale's tongue. But which animal takes the crown for the longest tongue?
Which animal has the longest tongue?
As ever, it depends on what you’re measuring. At about the size of an elephant, a blue whale’s tongue, which is used to force huge mouthfuls of water through the baleen plates that filter out its food, is probably the longest in absolute terms.
Relative to body size, though, it can’t match the chameleons. These predatory lizards can project the tips of their sticky, elastic tongues a distance of about one-and-a-half times their own body length to take out a fly. So it’s not entirely clear which of the two has this one licked. We could just say they are tongue-tied.
