As a collective, fish can be quite odd. Some of them can crawl despite having no legs, some can live out of water for over two months, and some can even fly.

Well, at the very least they can glide.
Despite the name, flying fish aren’t actually capable of flight. Instead, they launch themselves out of the water and glide like a paper aeroplane.
This adaptation is believed to have developed so they can escape predators who can’t see through the surface of the sea. Flying fish can also change direction when in the air, allowing them to put distance between themselves and the pursuing animal.
However, as this footage from the BBC’s The Hunt shows, flying fish don’t just face risk in the water. There are predators waiting outside of the water too, with frigatebirds ready to pick them off one by one.
And as David Attenborough narrates, the flying fish are soon “literally caught between the devil and the deep blue sea.”
