Watching a shark hunt prey was amazing enough – but then it plunged its nose into the reef… What was it after?

Watching a nurse shark hunt on a shallow reef in Cozumel, at around 14 metres deep, was a captivating experience, says Keren Flor.

The shark circled a small boulder, carefully scenting the water for any sign of prey. When it finally decided to strike, it pushed its snout deep into the reef, causing a large piece of hard coral to break off.

This coral had taken hundreds of years to grow, making the moment both intense and bittersweet.

Witnessing the raw power and precision of the shark was thrilling, yet it was hard not to feel saddened by the damage to such a fragile and ancient part of the reef ecosystem. This encounter offered a vivid reminder of the delicate balance between predator and environment beneath the waves.
