8 astonishing close-up photos of the world’s most beautiful pheasant

One of the world’s most colourful birds, the male golden pheasant is famed for its marvellous plumage, resplendent in bright shades of red, gold and blue.

Its most head-turning feature is undoubtedly the long, golden crest on top of its head, which fans out like a barrister’s wig. The female golden pheasant might not be such a visual showstopper, being a much paler brown, but she still sports distinctive markings.

These beautiful birds are native to China but are found in other parts of the world, although the British population of golden pheasants is believed to now be functionally extinct.
