Ecologists wouldn’t use the word ‘personality’ in a psychological sense, but researchers are recognising that individual plants within the same species can show consistent differences in how they grow – as well as how they respond to stress.
“My mental model is that plants are closer to computers running software,” says Susan Dudley, a plant ecologist at McMaster University in Hamilton, Canada.
“Different environments select for different programming.”
Dudley says the metaphor can help researchers think about plant strategies, but notes that plants operate very differently from animals. In that way, the metaphor of personality has entered ecological discussion, being referred to as ‘intraspecific trait variation’.
“With plants, we can test this directly,” says Dudley. “We see that both genetics and environment shape how individuals respond to the world around them.”
Studies published in journals such as Ecology Letters and Nature Ecology & Evolution have shown that individuals of the same species can predictably differ in growth rate, nutrient use and tolerance to drought or shade.
For example, some plants will consistently invest heavily in rapid growth and reproduction while others allocate more resources to durability and defence.
You can observe versions of this in your home and garden. Some houseplants wilt dramatically the moment they miss a watering, while others remain steady for days.
Some seedlings race towards the light then collapse in heat, while others grow slowly but retain their structure through times of stress.

This pattern aligns with what ecologists call the ‘leaf economics spectrum’: a global framework described in the journal Nature that shows plant species falling along a continuum from ‘fast’ strategies, such as rapid growth but short-lived, nutrient-rich leaves, to ‘slow’ strategies characterised by tougher, longer-lived foliage and conservative water use.
Think of the difference between nettles and sunflowers, which shoot up quickly in open ground, and holly and hawthorn, which invest in dense, durable leaves built to last. Research suggests that similar trade-offs that sit at different points along that strategy spectrum can also occur within a species.
This matters as environmental stress doesn’t affect all organisms equally. Conservative plants may survive better in a drought, whereas faster-growing species may dominate in wetter years.
This internal diversity can buffer populations against extreme weather and environmental change, shaping which plants persist and which disappear.
Plants also adjust to their surroundings, bending towards light, altering root growth in response to neighbours and increasing chemical defences after herbivore attack, finds work published in Ecology Letters.
The ecologist Richard Karban, whose research helped establish the field of plant behavioural ecology, says these responses reflect how actively vegetation can monitor its surroundings.
“Plants are constantly gathering information from their environment and adjusting their behaviour in response,” he says.
“They are far more aware of their surroundings than people once thought,” he continues. “They respond to scents in the air, the colour of light, who their neighbours are, and even insects walking across their leaves.”
So, while plants don’t have personalities, they do exhibit consistent strategies in how they grow, compete and survive.
This, in turn, highlights something important: that variation within species is part of how life adapts and endures.
