What is the Earthshot Prize 2025 and why does it matter?

It’s ambitious, transformative, and dedicated to finding solutions for our planet’s future – we take a look at the Earthshot Prize 2025.

This award seeks to recognise and support individuals and organisations developing innovative solutions to climate and environmental challenges.

What is the Earthshot Prize?

The Earthshot Prize is a prestigious global award designed to identify and scale groundbreaking solutions to the planet’s most pressing environmental challenges.

Launched by Prince William and The Royal Foundation in October 2020, the prize recognises initiatives that advance one of five key goals: Protect and Restore Nature, Clean Our Air, Revive Our Oceans, Build a Waste-Free World, and Fix Our Climate.

The prize takes its inspiration from former U.S. President John F. Kennedy’s Moonshot initiative, which challenged scientists to land an astronaut on the Moon and return them safely to Earth – a bold mission that not only succeeded but also drove major advances in technology.

Where is the Earthshot 2025 prize due to be held?

The Earthshot Prize 2025 will be hosted in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, in November 2025. The awards ceremony will feature Prince William alongside leading voices in global environmental action.

It is due to be held at the Museum of Tomorrow and will coincide with the COP30 climate conference. Brazil was selected as host in recognition of its extraordinary biodiversity, ongoing conservation efforts, and vibrant cultural heritage.

How are the finalists and winners chosen?

From over 1,000 annual nominations, a shortlist is reviewed by a diverse group of global environmental specialists. This panel helps identify the projects with the greatest potential and recommends 15 finalists.

Five winners are then selected from this shortlist, one for each Earthshot, by the Earthshot Prize Council, a group of world-renowned leaders dedicated to environmental action. Their achievements are honored at the annual Earthshot Prize Awards Ceremony.

What do the winners receive?

Each winner receives a £1 million grant along with ongoing mentorship, resources, and access to the Earthshot network, enabling them to expand their impact and drive lasting change.
