Gob-smacking BBC footage shows young wildebeest faced with a lethal almost suicidal cliff-face drop – does he jump?

Before they even reach the treacherous currents of the river, these wildebeest must leap from the sheer side of a cliff

In this BBC Earth footage, a herd of wildebeest is on the move, with a raft of challenges ahead. Before they even get to the treacherous currents of the fast-flowing river (and the crocodiles that wait there for them), the wildebeest face a lethal drop from sheer cliffs.

Around 1.3 million wildebeest, plus other antelopes and zebras, follow the rains around the Serengeti each year – one of the most amazing mammal migrations and wildlife spectacles around the globe.

Quickly, Gnu and his mother become trapped in the throng, and as the herd around them continues to move, so must they.

With wildebeest (and a rogue zebra) hurling themselves off the near-vertical drop, Gnu and his mother wait and watch – but they must tackle it too, even though it’s much too steep for the young wildebeest.

Watch what happens when these fearless wildebeest tackle this dangerous drop.
