"Can you imagine being chased by an apex predator?” Tourists watch incredible escape in Antarctica

Tourists were stunned when a pair of orcas tried to hunt a gentoo penguin alongside their ship. Here’s what happened next.

Wildlife watchers in Antarctica were amazed when a lone gentoo penguin managed to outsmart hunting orcas by racing and swerving away from them, dodging their approach.

“Can you imagine being chased by an apex predator?” says Polar Latitudes Expeditions when sharing the footage on Instagram

In the clip, the orcas can be seen repeatedly approaching the little penguin, which swims with all its might to get away.

Even the crew and wildlife guides were excited to see such a special encounter. “Everyone ran back and forth across the deck as the penguin and the whales surfaced on either side of the vessel,” says marine mammal expert Jeannine McCormack, a member of the Polar Latitudes Expeditions team who was on the Antarctic voyage in January 2026.

“In five years of guiding in Antarctica, I had never observed this behaviour, and it's an experience I won't soon forget,” she says. “I suspect many of us found ourselves rooting for predator and prey in equal measure.”

Seeing this documentary-worthy battle unfold before their eyes was a reminder of how incredible nature can be. "The encounter highlighted both the penguin’s remarkable swimming ability – astonishingly fast and agile underwater – and the intelligence of the orcas as they coordinated their movements and even used the hull of the ship to block the penguin’s escape route,” says McCormack.

She wonders whether the killer whales were in full hunting mode or just putting on a show, saying: "Of course, it is impossible to know whether the orcas were playing, practicing, or perhaps teaching a younger individual how to hunt but it really gave us an up-close look at the Antarctic food web in action.”

Luckily for the gentoo penguin, the little bird was able to get away. “The penguin ducked and dodged and swam its little heart out and managed to evade the mighty orca,” says Polar Latitudes Expeditions. “What a spectacle!”
